the beginning

No doubt, you’ll drive to Wendover and think you’re on the wrong road. It’s barely one lane, full of pot holes, and seems like it could come to an abrupt end at any second. Then, out of nowhere, Wendover's single-room post office turns up on your left. Just past the only official town building, the original Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) compound peeks down on you from the hillside above.

Up a rocky, green, blanketed slope sits a series of turn of the century buildings, including Mary Breckinridge’s log house (“the big house”).

With the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River rolling on your right, you turn up the gravel drive.

This is where the adventure begins.
